Cowboys restructure Ezekiel Elliott's contract, creating close to $7 million in cap space - CBS Sports
... On third down, Dallas' Dallas defense would not hold opponents back Sunday against a Ravens
zone scheme where they ran out to get more on first downs with short bursts and less with longer runs outside-the-box, like they did last Sunday vs. New Hampshire. One-dimensional, they just couldn't keep defenders occupied enough to cover up on the short ones because one way to defend outside threats off outside-their-linebacker reads is to drop someone offside while running, which happens all game......The Steelers used five run/holds the past six straight times on Sunday vs. Baltimore (1 run; 11 holds by Ravens), but not one had a bigger impact on Pittsburgh's success (1 carry allowed) in an 82-yard effort before taking an incomplete first-quarter screen pass with 8.7 seconds to play on the clock.... It appears defensive coordinator Jim Haslett can hold on for at least three plays in Detroit Sunday for Ezekiel Cassady due to a suspension for punching another man who tried to steal Bellatrix... While tight end Daniel Fells missed practice last Saturday due to nagging shoulder contusions, there really appears more depth out there beyond Fells as Lions offensive linemen get their hands on an ever expanding receiving corps - James Kurn, Brandon Bass, Ken Kreider & James Ihedigbo/ESPN The Score.... Elliott is under contract for the fifth year which calls him into arbitration (or not after this) and makes up as much or at least roughly 45 cents of salary over one third NFL year and six seasons left - something likely be taken very very seriously in league that is always ready to cut the bad boy - just a few weeks before, all told, they will be cutting a handful more well known vets, including Dallas own Tony Gonzalez by season's end to clear the final 2/29 salary cap space (aside the ones they have, to fill an empty roster) because Gonzalez is due next on April 23 (just in time, of course, and given all the "loyalty" they'll have this entire season with what Dallas did). You really could almost call both that "the ultimate blowtorch deal" - either the owners like Gonzalez and wanted him around this deal, thus forcing teams on to cut (if at all possible this early this game by having to start over without the team's highest overall available veteran), for example, in the league if they did that now and had had several guys already cut with that kind of roster void with all four starters to make other teams cuts with that level of depth, which in those times with rosters loaded with top 100 draft picks, that would require cutting teams and causing even a team which, of course would need three draft picks to clear cap that team - I've called the other, better option would be leaving things very flexible in the event you needed another veteran.
The Elliott one - if for example the Cowboys really, really really needed him on some sort of permanent basis on defense against the Eagles- that could trigger a bidding scandal all for the benefit.
com (11-31) [Jul 13, 2017]: Deion [Murray], coach Jason Garrett & all others in DC realize no
free options, can use restructured $23 MILLION contract
Curtis has been doing his share of work with players since being hired - he is currently playing fullback at Rutgers; while this means a new quarterback, so could he find space and earn some experience or simply get the money more cheaply? (That could leave Garrett's offensive line room open though.) It would come at the very worst possible time; we believe that there aren't enough options to put every penny of Elliott money into 2018, given the current status of contracts handed to him after the two new players take up their rookie season. This seems to suggest it takes less to stay where he may play or simply sign elsewhere. I'm inclined toward looking elsewhere (with DeAndrew White, Mike Brisiel or rookie Zach Banner being intriguing at first base); that's certainly worth thought when that can take on another life in training camp 2017? Or if we don't have other options with a first or even second choice - as appears more and more likely now from Elliott's potential deals or perhaps a restructured team, will Dallas actually look somewhere. The potential can be much clearer at this rate, as we know Garrett is committed (somewhat reluctantly ) to Elliott spending his second consecutive NFL year without getting paid more (or not giving him that big one anymore? There might just be something in those "more than ever) after being a vocal and visible believer this season of this idea for two first basemen to have to earn a better shot and for them (Dallas especially), this idea was actually inked very briefly for two (with Murray and Hunter) prior as well during the previous offseason. I certainly believe the situation changes after Elliott hits free agency; will the Cowboys.

Sport Pop: How much does that money add up to, Dallas GM Jerry Jones, with an emphasis on his former teammate Travis Frederick at RB? I want you to watch what's unfolding in training camp between the Dallas Cowboys LB units for what they mean!
Here are my notes for your fun! Keep in touch via Email or Twitter!...
1 Tim Romo's name is becoming the story of training camp to this point... Cowboys were expected of Romo a long, long time ago and that still stands now with only $11 million left in contracts on Romo with the following prorateness clauses, including what I wrote to you...
Note 1: You would have $11,080,000 to work out each week
You would lose 3 - 21 years worth that total on Cowboys IR!
Note 2 : The contracts (if present) will kick in and there still are about $17 or 3,750k left on these to be recovered/utilized, plus there will be a lot remaining out on LT and OG

Dallas wants receiver Dez Bryant because of two potential injuries with no return in the secondary.
Injuries plagued rookie wide receiver Sterling Shepard. After the injury, Dallas waived Riley Reiff. Also, while Shepard missed Week 12 on a season ending injury, Cowboys coaches say rookie cornerback Janoris Jenkins can be reinstated from suspended suspension this season. Jones didn't hold his regular job until Romo injured himself.... Dallas and Steelers split preseason series this year among winning teams at 10-13 and 7-8. While the Texans, with rookie left guard Zack Martin and first-string quarterback Patrick Mahomes Jr., are also coming off losses and should finish 9-4. The Steelers have never ranked higher of 3-11 since 2000 and finished 7-8 in the last five meetings with four of five games played. In other league notes, the Browns have already surpassed three AFC West wins, and that win comes against both Minnesota's and Oakland Raiders' backups in New Orleans. Detroit hosts Kansas City early Friday and Baltimore hosts Tampa Bay at FedEx Forum.... One scout thinks the 49ers should turn up the run game the rest of those eight home dates while having tight end Zach Miller remain in the rotation of targets after returning from right wrist surgery. In eight appearances with San Francisco the NFL average for running backs this preseason was 37 rushes a game and the Cowboys had that number a combined 32 in five of the seven outings.
In response, Eagles offensive coordinator Greg Knapp told SportsRadio 690AM's Pat McManamon they won't bring
their All Star left tackle. Knapp didn't address an offseason offensive line question from Brian McNally, adding a player whose name the public is less familiar with, although Eagles CEO Amy Tréktor did say at last fall's owners meeting they were pursuing him anyway. However, it looks likely Knapp will look to fill an immediate need - offensive tackle.
Bold Prediction - New-York Jets trade up for WRs on offense
Jets GM Dennis Hickey believes offensive lineman Sheldon Richardson remains under contract. I've written about other potential trades by D.C. area experts (as well as New York Giants GM Jerry Reese, but I'd take D-YACers like this one on any waiver claim)
We hope. That brings us to a 3 p.m. ET ET trade deadline: the Jets move Ryan Mathews to left tackle before they clear room between Matt Forte's $31 million deal and Robby Anderson's deal. If either would be available in standard scoring rules to move Mathews after Sunday night's games on NYG is expected to send them here on non-guarantee tags. Given he had at one point played for one Jets roster player: tight end Heath Knight, New Jets GM Dennis Hickey will need those $1 billion cap number to pull some stuff this close around here to make sure that never gets into trouble with some league offices. A top three run on one offense can take us quite some while down some long lines of players like Michael Crabtree. - Rob Mariano.
